Water Desk grantees

The Water Desk offers grants to support journalists and media outlets covering Western water issues. We seek to promote work in a wide variety of media and journalistic outlets: newspapers, magazines, websites, video, television, radio, podcasts and other channels.

Below is a list of our grantees. For more information on how journalists can apply for support, please see our grants page.

The 2019 and 2020 standard grants were supported by the Walton Family Foundation. The 2020 California Media Project was supported by the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation.

The Water Desk maintains strict editorial independence from its funders and the University of Colorado. Funders of The Water Desk have no right to review or to otherwise influence stories or other journalistic content that is produced with the support of these grants. For more about our editorial independence, please see our funding page.

The Water Desk’s mission is to increase the volume, depth and power of journalism connected to Western water issues. We’re an initiative of the Center for Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado Boulder. The Water Desk launched in April 2019 with support from the Walton Family Foundation. We maintain a strict editorial firewall between our funders and our journalism. The Water Desk is seeking additional funding to build and sustain the initiative. Click here to donate.
